Working at this scale, Meakins uses VR and 3D modelling techniques and cast aluminium to explore uncomfortable transitory poses of his body. Deflation, supporting, compression, crumpling and strain are all implied by the postures, this vulnerability sitting in contrast to their muscled forms. Coming from a fitness background - where mechanical repetition and weight bearing movement is used as a means to strengthen the body - Meakins questions the aptness of engineering metaphors to describe the body as a machine, instead focusing on intimate moments of collapse. This project has been supported by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.
