Tim Meakins is an Artist and Designer from Perth, currently based in the Pilbara, Western Australia. Working across sculpture, painting, print, animation and publishing, he employs a visual grammar drawn from the history (and present) of computer graphics/operating systems and cartoons to create intensely energetic propositions around the ever-mutating forms, limits, plasticity, optical register and possibilities of digital and analogue states-of-being.
Tim’s graphic design background feeds directly into visual investigations of human connection and inner dialogues; exploring how these construct relations to our physical reality and serve as points of departure for rearticulating how we think of the human body, nonhuman companions, and inanimate objects. By reworking common materials and cultural motifs, be it characters from Arthurian folklore, playground materials, industrial machinery, or gym equipment, Tim’s projects present micro-worlds that pull disparate objects and ideas into relation of each other. In doing so, Tim’s outcomes reinterpret the real world in playful and humorous ways that shift how familiar forms are understood.
A core part of his practice is the active exchange between digital tools and physical fabrication. He works with Virtual Reality drawing, 3D modelling, technical drafting, and animation, then brings these forms into the physical world through 3D printing and industrial construction. This movement between the hand and the machine shapes investigations into identity, humour, failure, and physicality.
Tim Meakins is represented by Australian gallery AVA (formerly Sweet Pea).
